Rigid designators should describe how referential terms are constant or relative in different contexts. The term is communicated between the speaker and the hearer in some context. In turn, a phenomenon can be any event, concept, thing or state, either real, artificial or abstract. A term can be any linguistic word or phrase in any method of communication intended to specifically and consistently refer to a phenomenon (most often proper names or indexicals like “now” or “you”). ![]() The phenomena underlying is independent of the term’s definition, and this understanding can lead to more accurate analysis and avoidance of deception. Where a term has been invented or redefined, it is important to remember that it is merely a term used for human convenience and communication. They are the fundamental building blocks of communication, and thus core to our understanding and interpretation of the world. Names, or more specifically proper nouns and indexicals, are used everywhere by humans. Rigid designators have been a heavily studied and practically useful concept in the philosophy of language for many decades. Rigid designators are a class of name or proper noun. ![]() Saul Kripke, building on the work of Ruth Barcan Marcus, introduced the idea of rigid designators to differentiate between these. Some apply regardless of how history unfolds whereas others are mere labels which refer to different things based on the slightest of shifts of perspective.
